AvenueK9 BuddyPress Theme

On 11, Jun 2009 | 49 Comments | In BuddyPress | By Mike

BuddyPack Light, a set of child themes for BuddyPress 1.2, is available for download here.

It’s finally done. The first incarnation of AvenueK9′s BuddyPress theme is hot off the keyboard and available for download/hackery. It’s far from perfect… and just before I started styling the BP home theme, I already started getting ideas for a newer, fancier theme. Eh. So what’s this got that the other ones don’t? A fixed width. I know that concept is rather vomit-inducing, but I really wanted to focus on continuity between AvenueK9.com and its *VIP* section. That included maintaining the container width sitewide. Since that site was optimized for those old, crappy 1024×768 monitors, the 980-pixel-wide design was carried over to theme its BP counterpart. Other changes include some switched content — mainly the masthead/logo, main navigation, login section and search box. Enjoy!

Cookin up a new BuddyPress theme

On 04, Jun 2009 | One Comment | In BuddyPress | By Mike

So I’ve been tinkering with the default theme and came up with this. It’s just another simple rework of Andy’s *awesome* BP 1.0 theme, but it’s got a fixed width, some switched content and the AvenueK9.com color scheme. This was also my first attempt at trying to customize a BuddyPress theme, which wasn’t all too hard. Granted, I didn’t read up on the docs for the proper ways of customizing, so my approach may be entirely wrong — especially, since I read the contents of the custom-sample.css file a bit too late — but it still works. If you want to know how to style a BP theme, it’s dead simple: copy the default theme, change the description of the style.css file, customize, upload, switch theme. Done. Down the road, I’m planning on creating something more unique/fancy/ajax-y, since the Skeleton theme is a great blank canvas to start off with.
